Communication is an integral part of digital learning. Edmodo offers multiple channels where you can reach your students. Before we share guides, here are a few reminders:
Clarify your intention. When crafting a message, make sure your purpose is clear. Are you explaining an idea? Encouraging participation? Providing critical feedback? Checking-in with their wellbeing? Communicating online is more difficult because of the lack of physical presence, make sure our message is understood.
Make them hear you. Conversational and personalized communication is proven to be more effective rather than dry and formal messages.
Be consistent. Set common times, routines, and platforms for your announcements and other forms of communication. When should they expect feedback on their assignments? Where should they check for your urgent announcements?
Keep it simple and digestible. As much as possible, make your messages short and concise—balance personalization with the essential content. Use visuals (such as graphics, emojis, charts) if necessary.
The home of your class page is the Posts tab, where you can add announcements and posts. To add a new post, simply click the textbox and start typing.
Aside from text, you can use other files and media in your posts such as files from your computer, resources from your Library, Google Drive, links to sites, and others. Here’s how:
In your Class Page, click the text box to make a new post.
Type the message in the text box.
Attach files and other media by clicking any of the grey icons below:
Use the Attach Files icon to attach files or images from your computer.
Use the Library icon to attach items from your Library. You can link Google Drive files from the Library section as well.
4. If you want to post the message right away, click Post.
5. If you wish to post the message at a later date, click the Schedule Your Post clock icon.
Do you want to send a quick survey to your students? Maybe you want to check their understanding of a topic, or you want them to vote on a particular idea. Add a poll to your post:
In your Class Page, click the text box to make a new post.
Click on Create a poll
Start with your poll question. Type it in the text box in the section labelled Type your poll question here...
Add poll options by typing in the sections labelled Type option here... To add additional response options, click + Add an option.
Click on Post when you’re done, or send it later by clicking on Schedule your post clock icon.
Note: polls are anonymous! So you would not be able to know which student voted for which option.
Digital learning is challenging for everyone, so teachers need to have a sense of how students are doing. Edmodo has a feature to check-in with students by sending a Wellness Check:
In your Class Page, click the text box to make a new post.
Click on Wellness Check. Doing this will automatically add a question and some response options that students can use to describe how they are feeling.
Click on Post when you’re done, or send it later by clicking on Schedule your post clock icon.
To have one-on-one or group chats with students, use Messages. Here’s how:
Click on Messages from the top toolbar. This will open all of your conversations.
To make a new conversation, click the blue pencil icon.
Type the name of the student(s) in the To field
Type your message in the text box below labelled Type a message…
There are options to insert an emoji, a file from the library or your computer.
