Badges are a great way to visualize achievement and to praise student performance. Before we share how to do it in Edmodo, we’d like to share a few best practices and words of caution when using Badges and awards in class.
Praise is a communication tool. It tells learners which kinds of behavior and actions are valued in class, and which ones should be sustained. Giving awards or praise just for the sake of giving awards is not recommended. Instead, you can focus on providing awards as a means to support good practices and inspire more students to do the same. Based on the research of Carol Dweck on Growth Mindset, here are some tips on using praise and awards:
Praise the process and effort, not the person. Avoid awards that say “smartest person”, or “most loyal”, as this is centered on personal attributes. Instead, refocus the praise on their effort, on the process that they took to achieve the outcome. Give awards such as “accepts challenges”, “never gave up”, and “practices thoughtfully”. These words communicate that success is reached through hard work, and not because of a personal attribute or trait.
Praise immediately. Timing is crucial because your goal is to let the student reflect on why they were praised. If given after an extended period, the student might associate the award as a token instead of a to encourage their behavior and effort.
Praise specific qualities. When the award or praise is too general or vague, it does not tell the students what they did well. Indicate particular actions or behaviors in the award, to make it more meaningful.
Before awarding badges, you will need to create them first. Read this article if you need help in making badges.
In the top navigation bar, click Classes then Progress, which will bring you to your Gradebook.
Select the specific Class that you want to award badges for. Your screen should show the list of students in your class.
Click the Badges tab, then click the Add Badge.
Select the specific badge you want to use, then click Add Badge to this Group. The badge should now create a new column in your student list.
Click the Check icon to select which students you want to award this badge to.
There might be instances where you will need to revoke a badge you have awarded. You can do so by following these steps:
Open the Profile of the student whose badge you wish to revoke.
In the profile page, open the About tab, then go to the badges section.
Click the Revoke button of the specific badge you wish to revoke.
Note: You can only revoke a Badge if you awarded that Badge. You cannot revoke Badges other teachers have awarded.
